Our Story
Inspired by Verbier And The high mountains of Valais
Conceived in Verbier in 2020. Distilled & bottled in Valais, Switzerland.
The Verbier Spirit Company was founded by husband & wife team, Tom & Vanessa James. Their love affair with Verbier has its origins in 1948 when Vanessa's Swiss/French family built a chalet above Verbier, which the family still owns. The story of Verbier Gin is more recent. It all started in December 2017, when the couple began playing around with an extensive library of distilled botanicals in an attempt to create a gin that would make the perfect Verbier-inspired gin and tonic.
Evoking the spirit of the mountains
During the winter of 2020/21, during an extended stay in Verbier, a chance discussion with the CEO of the Louis Morand Distillerie in Martigny led to the agreement to explore the idea further and to draw on the Morand family's five generations' worth of experience. Now, Verbier Gin is being produced in its home region.
Central to the flavour of Verbier Gin (a London Dry style of gin) is the inclusion of gentian root, used widely in Valais to make the gentian liqueur. It is one of the special bittering agents used in drinks like Campari and Aperol - perfect for both apres-ski and summer terraces.
The design of each bottle variant released by The Verbier Spirit Co. carries the image of a local mountain, with Verbier Gin featuring the steep silhouette of the Bec des Rosses.
The perfect way to end a day on the mountain.
As well as the traditional juniper, coriander and citrus botanicals, Verbier Gin has a balanced and fragrant taste, with rose bud, black tea, a gentle hint of the spice mace and locally-harvested verbena from the Grand St. Bernard Pass. The water is drawn from a source close to Champex-Lac, reputed to be one of the purest springs in Switzerland. This is a genuinely local product, which champions the Verbier and Valais region that Tom and Vanessa love so much.
Verbier Spirit launched in June 2023 exclusively in Verbier. 2024 will see the addition of Verbier Vodka to the range.
